Sandy Smith of Baxter enjoyed his first two-goal game of the season this past weekend in leading the Cleveland Lumberjacks past Fort Wayne in the International Hockey League. Smith, who also had an assist, has played in all 25 of Cleveland’s games this season.

The rift between the city council and Acting Police Chief Ken Bjerkness grew even wider as he broadened his attacks to include two city aldermen, the city clerk and a member of the Civil Service Commission. The council proceeded with the process of hiring a new chief.

Stewart C. Mills, Sr., was honored yesterday at a luncheon at the Holiday Inn to commemorate his 50 years in business in Brainerd. A scholarship in his honor has been set at Brainerd Junior College by his sons, Henry Mills II and Stewart Mills, Jr.

Forward Ron (Gup) Hess, who passed up Luther College to play with his hometown Brainerd JC Red Raiders, made a spectacular debut as Brainerd beat the Itasca Vikings 85-68. Hess tossed them in from all angles as he totaled 28 points.

Gothfred Swanson has formed a partnership with his brother, Hilding Swanson, for the practice of law in the Iron Exchange building. Hilding recently graduated from Yale Law School. Gothfred was recently elected county attorney and is also a special judge.
