One of the most outrageous displays of government overreach was trotted out on the floor of the United States Senate last week by anti-gun activist California’s Democratic Sen. Diane Feinstein. She wants to ban all semi-automatic guns.

I didn’t see a word about my Browning BAR 30.06 being exempt. In fact, my old Remington 7400 is going to be outlawed by this most recent attempt to restrict the kinds of guns of many law abiding citizens who hunt whitetails in Minnesota are able to purchase.

Remington, Winchester and Browning are among the most popular semi-automatic deer hunting rifles in North America. Bushmaster and Colt are gaining in popularity.

Duck, pheasant and grouse hunters should also be concerned if anyone uses a semi-automatic shotgun on the trails, ponds and logging roads of Minnesota. Note that Feinstein mentions rifles, but in her list of 158 firearms that are in her sights to ban are semi-auto shotguns.

“Feinstein’s measure would exempt more than 2,200 types of hunting and sporting rifles; guns “manually operated” by bolt, pump, lever or slide action; and weapons used by government officials, law enforcement and retired law enforcement personnel,” the Washington Times reports. Did you happen to pick up on the phrase “manually operated?”

For those who thought this was about banning “military style assault rifles,” think again.

Ironically, there are those who will be able to own any of the proposed weapons to be banned if Feinstein gets her way. They are government officials. They will be able to buy and use these banned weapons, even after leaving government service.

Oh, I almost forgot. Feinstein and the administration intend to limit ammunition magazines to no more than 10 rounds. (They did this in California where it had no impact on the number of murders committed by the gangs in Los Angeles or Oakland.)

No need to panic. Feinstein has everything under control. It’s those of us who cling to our guns and Bibles that are of concern to the good senator and the administration.
