20 years ago (1993)

After 17 years of teaching, it’s still a challenge walking into the classroom each day, says Dave LaShomb, who has been named Brainerd’s 1993 Teacher of the Year. LaShomb teaches several advanced placement courses and is a publications adviser.

30 years ago (1983)

What’s the size of a pancake? Is found on the floor? And costs $20,000 to clean up? The answer, at least at Brainerd State Hospital, is a PCB spill in the electrical room. Administrator Harold Gillespie said the spill is in a locked room so there is no danger.

40 years ago (1973)

State Senator Winston Borden of Brainerd was named as one of Minnesota’s Outstanding Young Men of the Year at a Jaycee banquet at Mayo Auditorium in Rochester. The 10 young men were presented their awards by Gov. Wendell Anderson, a former winner.

60 years ago (1953)

Approximately 200 area farmers attended the 3rd Annual Egg Show sponsored by the Brainerd Civic Assn. All seven blue ribbons were won by women in the judging held at the REA Building. Farmers heard from chicken and egg experts from the U of M.

80 years ago (1933)

Opposition to a sales tax bill now before the state Legislature was voiced in a conference between Brainerd store operators and the St. Paul Assn. of Commerce. The bill would provide for a 2.5 percent sales tax on all retail sales, subject to certain exemptions.

100 years ago (1913)

The sleigh of the C. M. Patek Co. broke while the driver, Peter Dryburgh, was delivering household goods in Southeast Brainerd. Striking the horses’ heels, it caused them to run away, and a bystander on Laurel Street who tried to stop them was knocked down.
