After 31 years in the bait business, Marv and Judy Koep are selling out so they can go fishing. They bought the business from Pete Link the same month they were married and spent their honeymoon selling bait. New owners are Jim “Duke” Fischer and wife Terry.

Like the proverbial sword, the Brainerd School Board’s budget cuts have been dangling for a long time. Last night the sword fell with a vengeance. The board placed 27 teachers and 17 FTE teaching assistants on unrequested leave, and laid off five other personnel.

(Photo) Golf Digest magazine has awarded Gordie Peterson and Irene (Ike) Smedley certificates as most improved golfers during the 1971 season at Brainerd Country Club. Peterson has played here five seasons and Smedley for four seasons.

Fred Ross, Pequot wrestler, pinned Buck Schiel of Gull Lake in 5 minutes and 14 minutes to take two of three falls before a packed house at the Finnish Hall. In a boxing exhibition, Ellen Larson staggered Doris Tracy in the first, but settled for a 3-round draw.

When the break down at the electric plant put the residential section in the dark, County Auditor Smart and Register of Deeds Trommald were working at the court house. Their business was of such importance that they each acquired a barn lantern and kept working.
