Reader Opinion: Switch to renewable energy sources
This is the last week for comment on the Volkswagen Settlement. If you've noticed the large number of Volkswagens parked at the old Paper Mill site, you may be aware that Volkswagen was sued for falsifying the emissions information for these cars that were sold in the United States. They were required to pay $47 million (to Minnesota), which is to be used specifically to improve large vehicle emissions.
Fifteen percent of the money can also be used for electric vehicle charging stations.
I feel that the most cost-effective solution is to switch to renewable energy sources, which will also reduce pollution from collecting, refining, and using fossil fuels. You may be wondering if the technology is really available to do this. According to the Quartz daily brief, Jan. 2, 2018, Shenzhen city in China has "transitioned its 16,359 buses to all-electric models." That is more buses than any U.S. metropolitan area, electric or conventional.
If all large vehicles, including delivery trucks, are transitioned to electric, just think! People will no longer be choking on gas fumes being circulated through their offices and workplaces by large vehicles.
