Open Forum: Sex scandals are distracting us

I really don’t care if hormone overload politicians like Democrats Bill Clinton, Eliot Spitzer, John Edwards, and Anthony Weiner, or Republicans David Vitter, Newt Gingrich, Larry Craig, and Arnold Schwarzenegger undertake sexual escapades. Such dallying in American government goes back to the 1700s.  Long ago, Europeans realized the futility of being shocked at high testosterone levels in male leaders. The public has suffered no crime at their hands.

We are letting sex scandals distract us from real failures regarding our environment, the economy, and international relations. The earth warms, jobs decline, infrastructure decays, and the Bush administration took us to an unjustified war in Iraq. Many thousands of Americans and Iraqis died, including innocent civilians. Millions were displaced.  But no one from the Bush administration has resigned in disgrace. We focus on spectacle and ignore the major issues that affect us all.
