Open Forum: Laws do arise from values

To justify the legality of abortion, some might use the argument: “We can’t legislate morality. The government should stay neutral on abortion, not imposing one view or the other.”

Don’t all laws — speed limits, antidiscrimination legislation, prohibitions on child abuse — arise from a particular system of values?

Even abortion advocate President Barack Obama admits the patently obvious: “To say men and women should not inject their ‘personal morality’ into policy debates is a practical absurdity; our law is by definition a codification of morality.”
