In November Minnesotans will face a proposed constitutional amendment that would limit the freedom to marry. There are certainly things that Minnesotans disagree about. some will vote for Obama and some will vote for Romney. Most of us are Vikings fans but there are some who cheer for the Packers. Some of us love Minnesota winters; while others do everything they can to avoid them. But as Minnesotans we can all agree on one thing — the importance of treating others the way we want to be treated. As we remember the Golden Rule, we need to decide if we are willing to exclude some people from the freedom to make a lifetime commitment simply because they are gay. None of us would want to be told that we are banned from marrying the person we love! I encourage you to begin having conversations about this freedom-limiting amendment with friends, families and neighbors. Ask your gay co-workers, neighbors, relatives, and acquaintances how they feel about this hurtful amendment. I trust that Minnesotans will “do unto others as they would have done onto them” in November and stand in defense of all families. Vote no on this amendment.
