Listen and vote

I am sure everyone is tired of the attack ads and the misinformation that they try to use to convince you to vote for their candidate or issue. “If only that money could be spent to help the poor or balance the budget,” we all say to each other. It is frustrating and tends to turn everyone off on voting for anyone or anything. We can’t let all of that misspent money sway us in our thinking. When you need information, go to fact check, listen to the candidates themselves and not what other people say about them.

Recently the League of Women Voters put on several forums to try to introduce the public to local candidates and where they stood on policies. They were attended by very few people who were undecided. When you see candidates interact and answer questions and debate you find out so much more than just reading about them or asking friends, “Who should I vote for?” When you have the chance, go to these public debates.

Voting is really such a precious gift. We are so used to having the right that we forget that there countries where you are jailed for speaking your opinion or shot for wanting to be educated, let alone being allowed to vote. When we just vote the party line because it is what we have always done or don’t listen to opposing points of view, we deny ourselves the right to be educated. Try to keep an open mind and listen to the candidates for the next few days rather than just get angry about those negative ads. People running for office are doing us a tremendous favor and are willing to put themselves on the line and work hard for their values. Please respect them even if you don’t agree with them. Listen and then remember to use your vote to express your opinion on Tuesday, Nov. 6.
