November 8 is “Parents as Teachers Day,” and I encourage parents to get involved as their teens begin driving. Car crashes are the number one cause of death for teens, and most of these crashes involve inexperience. .

Parents play a significant role in preventing these crashes, especially since teens cite their parents as the leading influence on their driving behaviors.

The more experience our teen drivers have, the better drivers they become.

We urge parents to ride often with their teens, even after their teens become fully-licensed drivers, and to establish rules including passenger restrictions, nighttime driving hours and bans on cell phone use.

Distractions, like inexperience, factor into many teen-related crashes and these rules will help limit teens’ risk while they gain skill behind the wheel.

The Minnesota Teen Safe Driving Coalition, an initiative of the National Safety Council and The Allstate Foundation, encourages parents to learn more about teen driving issues. By doing so, they will understand the importance of leading by example and remaining vigilant while teens navigate the first year of licensure — the most dangerous year of their young lives.
