Miss Brainerd Lakes

Miss Brainerd Lakes

It is with an extremely heavy heart that we are writing to inform our beautiful communities of Brainerd and Baxter that Bill Musel and I will no longer direct Miss Brainerd Lakes/Miss Baxter Scholarship Pageants.

A recent decision was made to replace us. As of March of this year Miss Minnesota chose a new board of directors. This new board made this decision. We were not told why this happened, other than Miss Minnesota is taking Brainerd in a “new direction.”

We did not choose for this. For those of you who know us, you know that Bill and I devoted our lives to the Miss America Organization and it was always about “the girls!” For those who were unaware, we built this program into the largest in the state of Minnesota, along with the addition of Miss Baxter and the Miss Brainerd Lakes Outstanding Teen Program, added in January. We are proud of all we accomplished and the amazing young women from our communities who participated in the program.

In the last nine years we have managed to pay out more than $25,000 in scholarship awards to title holders and runners-up. We had the great opportunity to have the financial support of so many amazing businesses and individuals who also believed in what we were doing. With this support we were able to keep our program financially secure and pay out the great scholarships.

Words can not express the gratitude we have for all your contributions over the years. A huge thank you goes to school district 181, community education for serving as our fiscal agent. Along with our financial security we managed to run a program of the highest integrity. I would like our community to also know at no time was there any wrong doings. We ran this program with respect for our community and our contestants!

The biggest thank you goes to volunteers and young women of our area.

You believed in us, trusted us. You are who we will miss the most! Thank you for all your dedication to us and this program. We will miss and love all of you!

Miss Brainerd Lakes Scholarship

St. Francis School

Last year, more than 47,000 individual donors logged on to and gave more than $13 million to nearly 4,000 Minnesota charities in 24 hours during the Give to the Max Day. Nov. 15 was the fourth annual Give to the Max Day.

Saint Francis Catholic School Foundation together with — a first-of-its-kind giving website for nonprofits and schools in Minnesota — is working to create a stronger school community.

Give throughout the day as “Golden Ticket” donor drawings will be drawn every hour where the Saint Francis Catholic School Foundation has a chance to win a $1,000 prize grant, and a grand prize of $10,000 will be awarded and the end of Give to The Max Day.

By giving online with, the Brainerd lakes area residents have the opportunity to make a huge difference for nonprofits and schools in our area. We hope you will help support our communities by logging on to, and give to your favorite charity or school. Be a part of this historical event and join this “Great Minnesota Give Together!”

NP Week through Nov. 17

National Nurse Practitioner (NP) Week is Nov. 11-17. There are 155,000 NP’s

practicing in the US with 3,240 in Minnesota alone. In celebration of NP Week please consider the value and function of an NP along with an MD or Physician Assistant (PA). With the current shortage of healthcare providers the demand for NP services continues to grow.

Both an MD and NP can serve in the role of primary care provider, a PA differs in that PA’s require direct supervision by an MD and cannot serve as a patient’s primary care provider. The focus of an MD/PA is primarily medical whereas an NP blends the nursing and medical roles in care planning as well as prescribing necessary treatments, medications, ordering tests etc. to help each patient achieve optimal health for their circumstances.

NP’s must obtain a masters or doctorate degree with one year of internship before practicing. MD’s are required to have one year of both internship and residency prior to practice beyond their medical degree. PA’s are required to obtain a bachelors degree and no internship or residency is required.

NP’s must recertify every five years (75 hours of continuing education (CE) in that time). PA’s recertify every six years (100 hours of continuing medical education (CME)/two years). MD’s are not required to recertify, however many do to maintain competency (50 hours of CME/year).

Many studies have shown that the care provided by MD/NP in primary care is equivalent and that care provided by NP’s is 20 percent less costly than care provided by MDs.

The American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) provides consumers quick and easy access to an NP. Go to to locate and NP in your area. If you have questions or need additional information, contact or call (512) 442-4262, ext. 5211.

I've worked at the Brainerd Dispatch with various duties since Dec. 7, 1983. Starting off as an Ad Designer and currently Director of Audience Development. The Dispatch has been an interesting and challenging place to work. I'm fortunate to have made many friends, both co-workers and customers.
