Water mains clarification
This letter is in response to the article in Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013, paper concerning the water mains in Brainerd.
First, some background on me. I worked as the waterworks foreman for Brainerd PUC for 30 years, retiring in 1995.
There definitely are mains in Brainerd over 12 inches, the largert being 18 inches with many 16-inch ones, some being over 50 years old, maybe over 80 years. There are water main maps at the city offices that show all the sizes and distribution. There should be some concern that whenever the streets were reconstructed some mains were not updated when needed. All mains in Brainerd are cast iron except the ones replaced over the last 30-35 years. Those are made of steel duct tile with bends that won’t break. Movement of frost in the ground will break cast iron much easier in sandy clay loam soil, which is in certain areas of southeast and northeast Brainerd.
