Religious rhetoric

There has been a lot of back and forth lately in the paper between people who follow Christianity and the existence of Jesus Christ and those who chose to throw cold water on the whole debate and say Jesus was a myth. Just to clarify, I‘m a believer in Christ but I want to come at this from another direction.

I once had a conversation with a man who told me the whole Christian story was just that. Nothing but a fable that made people feel good about themselves. The man was a fallen away Catholic so he did have some education in the story and life of Christ. He told me I was wasting my time worshiping and someday when I passed over to the dark side, I would realize just that. “We live and we die and it’s just that simple,” he said.

I asked the man if he knew that the teachings of Jesus ask us to live our lives in an honorable way, loving our fellow man and, yes, there are some things Christ asked us not to do, that seem like a lot of fun but in reality most of them come with a steep price, just using man’s laws. But if we follow the teachings of Christ, life is still pretty good and as a reward you get to heaven, if there is one. If there isn’t all you have done is lead a good life and believers or not, society as our judge would be proud of us and the world will be better off for the way we lived.

That being said, there are good people who don’t practice organized religion, but, for the most part they are not the ones making all the noise about getting rid of it.
