A grand choice

When Baxter’s Kris Nelson is driven along the parade route of the Brainerd-Baxter Fourth of July celebration the grand marshal will represent the good work of thousands of unsung heroes — the members of veterans’ auxiliaries.

Nelson is the incoming national president of the American Legion Auxiliary. She worked her way up the local, state and national ranks of the auxiliary organization helping young women and veterans in a variety of auxiliary programs. Here theme, once she assumes her new post in September, will be “In the spirit of God and country, we support veterans, the military and their families.”

Girls State was the program that initially inspired Nelson’s participation in auxiliary activities. Other programs she’s been involved in include support for the Ride 2 Recovery program for wounded soldiers and the Veterans Creative Arts Festival for vets with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

Brainerd Area Community Action made a fitting choice for grand marshal.

After graduating high school in 2004, I attended Central Lakes College in Staples, MN for 2 years where I got a diploma in Communication Art and Design. I then transfered up to Bemidji State University in, you guessed it, Bemidji, MN. In the spring of 2009, I graduated from BSU. Then in the fall of 2009 I got a job at Echo Publishing, a sister company to the Brainerd Dispatch.
