A long-time fascination with the whitetail
My fascination with the white-tailed deer goes back many years. They are an awesome animal and the more I scout and hunt these creatures the more amazed I am by their incredible ways.
My most recent encounter was just minutes ago (Thursday morning) as I witnessed a buck, nose to the ground, hot on the trail of a future Mrs. Buck. Oh, if you haven’t watched those short, choppy steps of an excited buck you are missing out.
It’s the second week of deer camp and there is just a dusting of snow on about 50 percent of the ground. It would have been nice to have that snow the other day while we were trying to follow a trail of blood. I was on a tracking mission that covered over a mile and two-and-a-half days. Mission accomplished at about 2 p.m. Wednesday as Steve’s buck was recovered (dead and for not too long). Persistence pays off and the white-tailed deer is one of the most awesome creatures that God created.
I think this second week of deer camp will be absolutely action-packed. Get out there and make a good shot.
My trip to Maiden Rock, Wis., was a nice experience, but Mr. Big didn’t step out into arrow range.
