Outdoors Notebook

The Progressive Insurance Northwest Sportshow, the Midwest’s largest marketplace for all things outdoors, returns to the Minneapolis Convention Center, 1301 2nd Ave. South in Minneapolis, on Wednesday through April 1.

The 80th annual show will include hundreds of new boats for sale, the latest marine, camping, fishing and hunting gear and accessories and dozens of travel booths will feature resorts and outfitters.

Attractions will include the History Channel’s Swamp People, the knife-throwing of Jack Dagger: The King of Fling, the Ducks Unlimited Room (kids will have the opportunity to paint and take home their own decoy, while supplies last), the Wild Turkey Room (kids will have the opportunity to make their own turkey calls, while supplies last), Discover Fly Fishing, Fish Tank Pro demonstrations and the Trout Pond and Fishing Kids book giveaway.

The show schedule: 1-9 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday. Tickets may be purchased online at or onsite the day of the show. Cost is $10 for adults 16 and older and free for children 15 and younger. Those 62 and older get in for $7 on Thursday — Senior Day.

Brainerd Elks Fishing Fling April 26

University of Minnesota head football coach Jerry Kill will again be the featured speaker at the annual Brainerd Elks Fishing Fling, scheduled April 26 at a new location — the Brainerd National Guard Armory, 1115 Wright St. in Brainerd.

Tickets are $50 — only 250 tickets will be sold — and all proceeds will benefit the Elks Youth Activities Fund.

Social hour is at 5 p.m., dinner at 7 p.m. and the program and prizes at 8 p.m. Dinner is a choice of prime rib or chicken oscar.

Prizes include a two-day/three-night trip for four to Wigwam Lodge at Lake of the Woods, an aluminum utility trailer, $500 gift certificate to Cub Foods, Vikings-49ers weekend with lodging, dinner at the Blue Goose in Garrison with a fishing launch on Lake Mille Lacs for four, a guided fishing trip with Glen Gelgum and more.

NABC events scheduled on Gull, Leech

The North American Bass Circuit and Range Bassmasters Club are joining forces to present the NABC’s 2012 Gull Lake qualifying tournament.

Set for Aug. 4 at Cragun’s Resort, the event is the third of four qualifiers on the 2012 NABC trail, which also includes the Lake Winnebago Chain at Oshkosh, Wis., May 12; Madison Chain at McFarland, Wis., June 23; and Leech Lake at Trapper’s Landing Lodge in Walker on Sept. 8.

Open to all anglers regardless of sponsor or club affiliation, the Gull Lake tournament offers payouts based on the number of teams entered. A full 50-team field will yield $10,000 for first place, $3,400 for second, $1,500 for third and pays out to $500 for 10th place.

ATV Spring Fling scheduled April 15

Brainerd area ATV clubs will host their fifth annual ATV Spring Fling on April 15 at the Old WaterFall Inn on Highway 371, north of Brainerd.

The event starts with a social at 2:30 p.m., speakers at 3:30 p.m, and dinner and door prizes starting at 4:30 p.m.

Tickets for the event, sponsored by the Central Lakes ATV Club and the Cuyuna Iron Range Riders Club, are $15 for adults and $5 for children 10 and younger. For tickets or more information, call Darrel Palmer at 828-0353.
