Walleye tournament on Mille Lacs
2 for 1
Walleye tourneys coming to Mille Lacs
Now this is a tournament fit for Mille Lacs.
The Cabela’s National Team Championship and Master Walleye Circuit Combine Tournament is scheduled Thursday through June 2 on Lake Mille Lacs.
Approximately 300 boats are expected to compete in dual tournament, with the NTC and MWC events being contested at the same time. Many of the competitors compete in both tournaments. Purse for the MWC event is $104,600, with $30,000 for first place.
“The MWC and NTC tournament have been run together for the last four or five years and two years ago at Lake Winnebago, we had a record-setting tournament with 362 boats,” said Gus Beckstrom, operations manager for the MWC out of Minnetonka. “Most teams this year will be participating in both tournaments at the same time, which means we will weigh their best five fish (per team per day) and that will be recorded for both tournaments.
“The schedule for this year will be a little different from last year. The MWC and NTC will take place on Thursday and Friday, with the MWC tournament wrapping up on Friday. On Saturday, the top 25 NTC teams will fish for their final NTC standings. The Thursday and Friday weigh-ins will take place at Izatys Resort (Onamia) and the final NTC weigh-in will be at McQuoid’s Inn (Isle).”
The National Professional Anglers Association (NPAA) will conduct a family fishing clinic after the Day One weigh-ins, with autographs from the pros for the kids along with free fishing rods from Cabela’s, tackle from Northland and T-shirts from the NPAA. Depending on flighting, boats must be in between 3:30 and 5:45 p.m.
Chad Maloy of Fargo, an fishes the MWC and also serves on the circuit’s advisory panel, said: “There are close to 220 signed up for the NTC and 100 for the MWC. And a good number of locals that have qualified.”
Those competing from the greater Brainerd lakes area include Darrel Johnson and Sterling Spicer of Brainerd, Alan and Nate Strelow of Onamia and Kevin and Karen McQuoid, Tim and Terry Ajax, Stacy Forsberg and Chris Meyer of Isle.
