Hot temps - and fishing hot spots
Brainerd MN 506 James St. / PO Box 974 56401

Well, here we are, in the heat of the summer. Our guides have been hoppin’ and the fish have been biting — most days.

Bruce, Nick, Jon and myself and some of our fill-in guides are staying busy on our area lakes. Gull always seems to see the majority of our time, but the way Mille Lacs has been producing, it’s hard not to mix in a trip or two over there as well.

As the water temperature starts to rise, it seems like all species increase their feeding activity. The weed edges on Gull, North Long and Whitefish are the place to be if you just want action. If you set a slip bobber rig at about 8 feet near the edge of the weeds and put a small hook with a chunk of leech or worm, will have non-stop action.

If you are looking for bigger fish, try a live bait rig tipped with a large red-tail chub or creek chub and you will get interest. Once again, work the edge of the weeds, preferably the wind-swept areas.

Also, I was swimming by the rock pile on Gull over the Fourth and the zebra mussels are thick — and sharp. I came up with a bloody palm.

I've worked at the Brainerd Dispatch with various duties since Dec. 7, 1983. Starting off as an Ad Designer and currently Director of Audience Development. The Dispatch has been an interesting and challenging place to work. I'm fortunate to have made many friends, both co-workers and customers.
