Hitting the target in Missouri

Email

Hello readers!

I would first like to let you know that the walleyes have been chowing down in the Brainerd lakes area and our guides have been making things happen out there. This starts “the season”, the season of everything!!

And instead of talking about all of the things you can do during this awesome period of time I would like to talk to you about three things — rifles, handguns and shotguns. I recently joined Team Huldra (Stewart Mills, Troy Schreifels and Dave Timm) and set off for my very first 3-Gun Championship.

We road tripped down to Lake of the Ozarks, Mo., where we all competed with some of the best shooters in the world. Thanks to some pre-match training by Dave Timm and some great tips throughout the event from Stewart, Troy, Dave and other professional shooters, I felt a little more confident after each completed stage. I am not one of the best (or anywhere close) but I had an absolute blast and was amazed by the humble and helpful (99 percent of them) people I was able to rub shoulders with during this three-day shoot.

And yes, we were filming for our upcoming television show, “We Love It”, Outdoors presented by Mills Fleet Farm. This made it even more nerve racking for a rookie like myself but I guess it will probably make for good entertainment!

My weakest link is handgun and I will certainly have to hone my skills in that department before I compete again. This is a sport like no other and I had no clue what I was getting myself in to. But after our last stage on Sunday, I was ready to shoot some more. For those of you that think guns are evil, you should come to an event like this and I truly believe you will walk away with a whole new perspective.

Have a nice weekend, Walleyedan.
