■ Candlelight Ski at Mille
Lacs Kathio State Park
Mille Lacs Kathio State Park will hold its annual Candlelight Ski event from 6 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. People of all ages are invited to ski by the light of the full moon, with candle luminaries to help guide the way.
Volunteers will prepare two separate routes for this popular annual event. A one-mile loop, as well as the two-mile trail between the park’s trail center and interpretive center will be lit. Ski rental is available on a first-come, first-served basis. A shuttle bus will run continuously between the trail center and interpretive center. Ski trail conditions at Mille Lacs Kathio are reported as good.
Refreshments will be served and there will be live music provided by Hans Blix and the Weapons Inspectors. This Brainerd-based musical group will play a mixture of old fiddle tunes, folk, Irish and contemporary music at the park’s interpretive center from 7-9 p.m.
A snowshoeing trail and a short walking trail will also be marked with luminaries. Snowshoes will be available free of charge for those who wish to try the moonlight snowshoe trail.
There is no charge for the Candlelight Ski event. A vehicle permit is required to enter Minnesota State parks. Daily and annual permits are available at the park office. If you are 16 or older and plan to ski, a Minnesota Ski Pass is required. Daily Minnesota Ski passes are available at the park office.
The Kathio Candlelight Ski is co-sponsored by Minnesota State Parks & Trails and the Natural Resource Club of Central Lakes College.
Mille Lacs Kathio State Park is located 8 miles north of Onamia, 14 miles south of Garrison, on U.S. Highway 169.
