Whiteout to blanket Cuyuna lakes area March 1-2
CROSBY — The Cuyuna Lakes Whiteout is just around the corner and organizers are encouraging racers and non-racers alike to get out and enjoy the winter cycling event.
The second annual Whiteout will take place March 1-2 at the Crosby Memorial Park and the Sagamore Unit of the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area.
“Whiteout is a way our communities can celebrate winter and enjoy the sport of fat biking,” said Aaron Hautala, president of the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Crew, the volunteer organization putting on Whiteout. “We encourage those who aren’t racing to bring their cowbell and cheer on those who are.”
Races range from the Iron Yeti Sagamore SnowXcross Race, with six-, 12- and 18-mile courses, which starts at 10 a.m. in the Sagamore Unit off Highway 59 near Riverton, to the Serpent Lake Ice Bike Race at 3 p.m. and the Fat Tire Ice Drag Race Championship at 3:30 p.m., both taking place on Serpent Lake near Crosby Memorial Park.
Fat bikes, with their extra-large tires for cruising over snow-covered groomed trails, will be available for spectators to try out at Crosby Memorial Park during Whiteout. There will also be food, beverages, music, kids’ activities and photo opportunities with the Cuyuna Lakes Yeti.
Whiteout is one of the Cuyuna Lakes Mountain Bike Crew’s largest fundraisers, raising money for the maintenance and expansion of the trails.
