What's Up Outdoors: Prepare for the cold
Apparently Mother Nature is holding a grudge on somebody — we have gone from ice on opening of fishing in 2013 to bitter cold day after day in the forecast for 2014.
The fishing reports have been from OK to great, depending on how much you want to go through to get a fish. I usually love staying out in the fish house but these are the temps that freeze propane and turn vehicles into huge icicles. You have to think about being equipped to handle it if you run out of heat and your truck won’t start at 3 a.m. Are you prepared to get off the lake?
Some of the things people do not think about are keeping an extra heater inside with a full tank of fuel and taking your battery out of your vehicle and keeping it inside also.
For me, 2014 will be the year of ice fishing from a snowmobile and a portable instead of spending every weekend out in the wheelhouse. For years I have missed out on getting back in the sticks and off the beating path. This year I have a sled with electric start and reverse and an insulated Otter fish house, so there should be some great adventures.
Oh and by the way, if anyone tells you that sticking your tongue to your fish house door will un-freeze it, it doesn’t.
