What's Up Outdoors: Going after salmon in Door County

What do you do when it's Thursday and you are looking for something different to do for the weekend? Well, you call your buddy Mark Courts who happens to run a salmon boat on Lake Michigan.

Luckily due to a cancellation we had the boat for Saturday, so off to Sturgeon Bay we went. After getting to our hotel late we were not looking forward to the 3 a.m. wake up call, but at the same time we were excited to get our first king salmon on the line. Leaving the harbor around 4 a.m. we didn't have to wait long before the fish was hooked up and in the cooler.

Although fishing wasn't great, it was still plenty of action for us and my wife, Tammy, got the big fish of the day. After a long battle from which she says she is still sore from she got the 19.5-pound salmon on the boat. Being we were in Door County we thought we should see some of the things that make it such an amazing destination. Next we were off to pick some cherries from one of the many orchards there. Then of course it was time to do the cheese thing, after that it was time to check out the entertainment. Mark told us anything you could possibly want was there and boy was he right. Tons of options of places to eat, drink and check out some great bands. It will be a weekend trip for the books that's for sure. A huge shout out to Mark Courts for the fun fishing trip and showing us around the town. If you are looking for a quick getaway I highly recommend checking out Sturgeon Bay, Wis.
