Youth ATV class Aug. 26
The Central Lakes ATV Club has scheduled a youth safety AT training event from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Aug. 26 at the Crow Wing County Fairgrounds in the curling building (enter at the south gate on Southeast 13th Street, building is just inside the gate on the left).
Youth must be ages 6-15 and have completed an online ATV course. They also must bring their own ATV and have the required safety gear as discussed in the course. Parents are required to attend the training to help with any ATV equipment issues. There is a $29.95 charge payable for the online course.

Reminder: Apply by Aug. 18 for Camp Ripley archery hunts
Hunters can apply through Friday, Aug. 18, for the regular archery deer hunts at Camp Ripley near Little Falls. Apply online at mndnr.gov/buyalicense, by phone at 888-665-4236 or in person wherever Minnesota hunting and fishing licenses are sold.
Hunters may pick from only one of two hunting seasons: Oct. 19-20 (Thur.-Fri., code 668) or Oct. 28-29 (Sat.-Sun., code 669). A total of 4,000 permits, with 2,000 per two-day hunt, will be made available. The bag limit for this year's hunt is one, and bonus permits may be used to take antlerless deer.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources will sample deer harvested at the Camp Ripley hunts for chronic wasting disease. There will be protocols in place for sampling and for handling trophy deer using licensed taxidermists.
The archery hunt at Camp Ripley is an annual event. The DNR coordinates the hunt in collaboration with the Department of Military Affairs and the Central Lakes College Natural Resources Department. Visit mndnr.gov/deer to find additional rules and instructions for this year's hunt.
Crow Wing Lake Improvement District annual meeting
The Crow Wing Lake Improvement District will hold its annual meeting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 26 at the St. Mathias Community Hall. Crow Wing Lake property owners are invited to a complimentary brunch at 9 a.m. prior to the meeting. There will be an election of LID Board of Directors for the 2017-2020 term. Ballots will be sent out to property owners in the August newsletter and be available at the meeting. The Crow Wing Lake Association will hold its fall meeting following adjournment of the LID Meeting.
Ruffed Grouse Society banquet Aug. 31 in Hackensack
The Deep Portage Chapter of the Ruffed Grouse Society will host its 28th Annual Conservation and Sportsmen's Banquet on Thursday, Aug. 31, at the Deep Portage Conservation Reserve, 2197 Nature Center Drive NW in Hackensack. Social hour will begin at 5 p.m. and dinner will be served at 7 p.m.
As with all RGS fundraisers, proceeds from this event will be used to enhance habitat for ruffed grouse, American woodcock and other forest wildlife. The evening will feature a live and silent auction, games, drawings and door prizes, highlighted with the finest selection of quality firearms, artwork and collectables.
Individual membership and dinner tickets are $60. There is also a membership and spouse package for $95 (includes 2 dinners) and a junior membership and dinner ticket is $35 (17 and under). Banquet, Conservation, Sustaining, and Gold sponsorship packages are also available at $295, $550, $1,000 and $2,500, respectively.
