MAPLEWOOD - Kelsey Grider hauled in 20 rebounds and posted 16 points while Bethany Kressman added 15 rebounds and 14 points in powering the Lake Region Christian Hornets to a 42-37 win over Maplewood Academy in their season opener Thursday night.

WADENA - Caitlin Volkmann scored 22 points, including 18 from behind the 3-point line, as the Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines improved to 2-0 with a 74-64 win over the Sebeka Trojans in a non-conference game Thursday.

Avery Jackson finished with 16 points and Courtney Volkmann added 10 for the Wolverines. Emily Miron had a big night with 11 rebounds, three steals, and four blocked shots for the Wolverines.

PINE RIVER - Hannah Lemberg poured in 17 points and added seven assists and Tatum Sheley notched 13 points in the Pine River-Backus Tigers' season-opening 65-50 loss to the Upsala Cardinals in non-conference play Thursday.

Autumn Ackerman pulled in a team-high nine rebounds for the Tigers, who were outrebounded 51-26.

STAPLES - Abby Smith scored 14 points and Mikayla Wing 11 as the Staples-Motley Cardinals came up short in a 50-45 non-conference loss at the hands of the Fergus Falls Otters on Thursday.

"We played pretty solid defense," Cardinals coach Arden Beachy said, "just kind of hit a lull at the end of the game offensively."
