GIRLS BASKETBALL: Sauk Rapids edges Warriors
SAUK RAPIDS - After leading by as many as 10 points in the second half, the Brainerd Warriors were unable to hold off the Sauk Rapids Storm in losing 61-60 in a Central Lakes Conference clash Thursday.
The Warriors were led by Emilee Branum with 14 points and Ashley Tibbetts' 11.
Brainerd was leading 60-59 when Sauk Rapids' Cori Becker hit a 15-foot jump shot with two seconds left. Becker finished with 21 points and teammate Bailey Weirens added 25 as only four players scored for the Storm, who trailed 37-31 at halftime.
"We let them hang around and the longer they hung around, the more confidence they got," said Brainerd coach Brian McAllister.
"The girls played hard, but tightened up and we missed some free throws (13 for 25)," he added. "That's been a problem for us all year.
"At least we took care of the ball. We've been averaging 20-plus turnovers a game and tonight we only had 10 so that was good."
The Warriors outrebounded the Storm 42-31, led by Carlie Sweet with 15 and Ally Mueller's nine.
