Aitkin nips 10th-ranked Grand Rapids

AITKIN — Heavyweight Cooper Blau’s decision lifted the Aitkin Gobblers to a 33-32 win over Class 2A’s 10th-ranked Grand Rapids Thunderhawks in Thursday’s non-conference meet.

Mike Stafford and Jordan Chouanard each picked up pins for the Gobblers.

Jerod Novak, Shawn Philipp, Dalton Stevens and Andrew Bast earned decisions for the Gobblers.

STAPLES — Josh Becker gained a victory by pin at 119 pounds and the Staples-Motley Cardinals went on to defeat Bertha-Hewitt/Verndale 52-27 in a non-conference meet Thursday.

Blake Miller, Jordan Heldman, Austin Redemske, Gavin Kadlec and Chandler Trout were the other Staples-Motley wrestlers that won by fall.

Dakota Fink and Colin Turchin scored pins for B-H/V.

LITTLE FALLS — Dillon Kifer and Joe Tuholsky each registered pins as the Little Falls Flyers lost 42-26 to Class 2A’s 11th-ranked Fergus Falls Otters in Thursday’s Central Lakes Conference meet. 

Connor Scherping, Frank Wilczek and Jack Jendro also picked up wins for the Flyers, who suffered their first conference loss.

PIERZ — Brad Meyer earned a major decision and improved to 14-4, but the Pierz Pioneers were defeated by Class 1A’s fourth-ranked Kimball Cubs 41-21 in a Central Minnesota Conference meet Thursday.

Clint Poster improved to 16-0 with a 6-0 decision, but the Pioneers saw their streak of nine consecutive dual meet wins come to an end.

Nathan Tomala’s pin improved his record to 9-2 and Sean Huls won by technical fall to improve to 10-3.

WADENA — Jared Wegscheid raised his record to 12-3 with a victory by fall, and Devin Barthel scored a decision at 112 for Wadena-Deer Creek in a 55-9 loss to Border West in a Section 6-1A meet Thursday.

Border West was ranked 10th in Class 1A and the Wolverines dropped to 7-2.
