BOYS HOCKEY: McLain’s goal lifts Warriors; Brainerd preps for Roseau
WILLMAR — Mitch McLain’s goal at the 8:42 mark of the third period proved to be the game winner as the Brainerd Warriors edged Willmar 2-1 in a Central Lakes Conference game Thursday.
Josh Archibald assisted on the goal and scored Brainerd’s first goal in the opening period moving him to within two points of the single season record of 66 set by Jerr Johnson in 1991-92.
In a rare occurrence, neither team was whistled for a penalty in the 51 minutes of play.
“This was the first game I’ve ever coached where there wasn’t a penalty on either team,” said Brainerd coach Jim Archibald.
Kyle Helmberger registered 17 saves as the Warriors outshot the Cardinals 32-18.
“We outshot them almost 2-1, but their goaltender played very well,” Archibald added. “Our boys just kept pounding away and eventually wound up with the win.”
Brainerd, 15-6 on the season, plays a key Section 8-2A game Saturday afternoon at Roseau.
“Our boys know how important it is,” said Archibald. “If we go out and play the way we know we can, we will be successful.”
