BOYS BASKETBALLL: Brainerd ends losing streak, beats Willmar
The wait is over.
Nick Belgum scored 22 points as the Brainerd Warriors tasted victory for the first time in 32 days with a 71-64 win over the Willmar Cardinals during Tuesday’s Central Lakes Conference clash at Brainerd High School.
Belgum’s proficiency inside the paint led to attempted double-teams by the Cardinals. With the perimeter open, the Warriors knocked down eight 3-pointers — three by both Kevin Peterson and Jack Sauer and two more by Blake Peterson.
Blake Peterson finished with 12 points for the Warriors, stopping Brainerd’s losing streak at nine.
“It was a big win for us,” Warriors coach Wade Haapajoki said. “We had been on a skid for a while and we put two good halves together.”
Sauer finished with 12 points and Kevin Peterson 11.
Willmar 31 27 — 64
Brainerd 35 36 — 71
