Brodt, Borden winners in ice races

A total of 15 cars participated in the Crosslake Ice Racing Association’s ice races on Saturday.

In the studded tire class, Clyde Brodt from Crosslake took first place with Isaac Wannebo from Manhattan Beach second and Drew Seeker, from Crosslake third.

In the rubber tire class, Matt Borden from Merrifield won with Shawn Pratt of Merrifield second and Larry Juaire from Brainerd third.

Ice racing is scheduled for noon on Saturdays through March 5 on Big Pine Lake, three miles south of downtown Crosslake, in front of the Cedar Chest. Spectators are welcome to view the races at no charge from a plowed parking area on the lake, adjacent to the race track.

Spectators can take Big Pine Trail, east from County Road 3 to the Big Pine Lake public access and follow the plowed ice road out to the track.

Hadrits 2nd, Ruzich 6th overall

Ty Hadrits, Brainerd, was the second top shooter in the 30 mph ground blizzard at the Duluth Snowflake Nordic Center to finish second in the youth men’s 10-kilometer mass start biathlon event

Shooting 0, 2, 5, 3 Hadrits pushed his ski speed to finish in 40:39, 1:19 behind the winner, Tyler Gustofson of Grand Rapids.

Jenna Ruzich, the sole Youth Woman in the event, was the top shooter as she raced up to the 10-k race for some competition. Shooting 1, 1, 2, 3 Ruzich held her own against the guys finishing in 46:30 for 6th place in the race. 

The next event will be March 6 at Elk River followed by US Nationals March 16-20 at Mount Itasca.
