Hats fly in BHS victory
Brock Saatzer recorded one.
Tyler Theien earned one, too.
Wes Blomberg was one goal away from joining his linemates in getting a hat trick during the Brainerd Warriors 10-7 North Conference victory over the Maple Grove Crimson Thursday at Riverside Elementary.
Saatzer, who scored the game’s first three goals for his third hat trick of the season, finished with four.
“The first goal it just rebounded and I was there at the right place, right time, I guess,” said Saatzer. “It was the same for the rest of them.”
Theien racked up his hat trick with three second-period goals, helping Brainerd to a 6-2 lead after two.
It was Theien’s second game back for the 7-1 Warriors and his presence was felt, said Brainerd assistant head coach Ron Allord.
“Our whole concept with this is a passing game,” said Allord. “We’ve always told our kids if we have good passing the scores will come. The last two days we’ve worked on just passing and I just think they clicked with some good passes and it brought in some goals for us.
“Little Brock Saatzer, when he is hot, he is hot. He was on fire.
“Tyler was a little down after the first period that he didn’t get a good chance to score and we just told him good passes and it will come. In the second period it did.”
Blomberg finished with two goals and two assists. Both of his goals came in the third as did Austin Annable’s goal. The spirited defenseman added four assists, including his last on Saatzer’s last goal, which handed Brainerd a 10-3 lead with 3:30 remaining.
After some substituting, the Crimson stormed back with four goals in a two-minute span. Maple Grove’s last came with 35.7 seconds left for the final score.
“A win is a win,” a relieved Allord said. “We’re 7-1 right now. We have Mounds View and then Robbinsdale. Robbinsdale is the only team that we have lost to. They are good. I think if we practice and play well, we’ll be all right with them.”
The Warriors will have to cut their penalties if they hope to contend with Robbinsdale. Brainerd was whistled for six penalties Thursday. Maple Grove capitalized with one power-play goal in the second period.
“That was one big thing we talked about before the game,” said Allord. “We wanted to slow it down and watch the checking. We’re a little disappointed in the penalties and we’ll talk about that on Monday.”
