Rardin wins, six BHS girls finish second

ST. CLOUD — Lexie Rardin was Brainerd’s champion and Manon Gammon-Deering and Rochelle LeBlanc won for the Little Falls Flyers in Saturday’s season-opening Huskie High School Classic at St. Cloud State University.

Rardin won the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:05.80. Runner-up Chelsey Petrich of Elk River finished in 1:07.46.

“At this race last year (teammate) Alli (Kosebud) won it in 1:07 something,” Warriors coach Dan Clabo said. “Lexie had a very good race. In the 4x400 she ran about the same time for the same split.

“Lexie’s coming into the season in very good shape. It was interesting to see what she could do indoors. It was a tight 200 in there so your time’s not going to be as good as outdoors but Lexie’s time certainly was a very good time.”

Gammon-Deering paced the 1600 run and LeBlanc led the pole vault competition with a height of 10-1. The Flyers’ Maria Hauer was second in the 1600 and teammate Mariah Burns was runner-up in the high jump.

Second-placers for Brainerd included Hannah Lundstrom in the 60 dash, Kosebud in the 800 run, Anna Gessell in the 3200 run, Chloe Miller in the 60 hurdles, Sydnie Mauch in the shot put and the 4x400 relay of Kosebud, Megan Holmes, Gessell and Rardin.

“Hannah ran a very good race against Briana Traut (of Rocori) for first-place position,” Clabo said. “It was a close race. Briana’s a very good athlete. It was a fun race to watch.

“We tried some new kids in different events, and it turned out good. There were no tears or injuries that I know of. When you can come out of a meet that early in the year injury free it’s a great thing.”

After graduating high school in 2004, I attended Central Lakes College in Staples, MN for 2 years where I got a diploma in Communication Art and Design. I then transfered up to Bemidji State University in, you guessed it, Bemidji, MN. In the spring of 2009, I graduated from BSU. Then in the fall of 2009 I got a job at Echo Publishing, a sister company to the Brainerd Dispatch.
