LOCAL SHORTS Brainerd youth baseball deadline Friday

The deadline to register for the Brainerd Parks and Recreation Department's Mustang, Bronco and Pony baseball leagues is Friday.

Register at the Lum Park office during regular business hours or go to www.brainerdparks.com and print a mail-in registration form.

Cost is $50 for Mustang and Bronco leagues, $55 for Pony League. Scholarship funds are available to those in need of financial assistance.

Markert sets state records

Phil Markert of Lakeshore set three state records and captured a silver medal March 26 in the Minnesota State Olympic Lift contest in St. Paul.

Competing in his 30th consecutive state meet, Markert snatched 70 and 83 pounds for 154 total pounds, all of which were masters state records in the 75-79 age group.

Markert became the oldest man to win a silver medal in the contest. He has set more than 300 state masters records in his weightlifting career.
