HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Pequot opens season in big way

PIERZ — Kayla Wangen pitched all seven innings striking out nine and giving up just two earned runs in leading the Pequot Lakes Patriots to a 14-6 season-opening win over the Pierz Pioneers Thursday.

Megan Hogen provided an offensive punch going 4-for-5 (all singles) scoring twice and driving in six RBIs.

Rachael Langer and Brooke Serfling hit doubles for the Patriots.

Pierz was led by Megan Boser’s home run and Michaela Rocheleau’s 3-3 performance that included scoring two runs and an RBI. Losing pitcher Katelyn Fuhrman also went 3-3 with a double, two RBIs and one run.

LAPORTE — Tatum Sheley amassed four runs and three RBIs while going 3-4 from the plate as the Pine River-Backus Tigers tamed the Laporte Wildcats 25-2 during Upper Mississippi Conference play Thursday.

Morgan Demars added five runs and Autumn Ackerman drove in four. Lexi Hanson struck out five through five innings of work to earn the win.

Ogilvie 16, Aitkin 1

OGILVIE — Kaitlin Larson singled and scored the only run for Aitkin in the Gobblers’ 16-1 Great River Conference loss to Ogilvie Thursday.

The Gobblers’ managed just three hits in the contest with Jenna Kangas singling in Larson and Sarah Johnson accounting for the remaining hit with a single.

LITTLE FALLS — Makayla Jorgensen recorded two runs and drove in one more as she reached base in three of her four plate appearances, but the Little Falls Flyers surrendered 10 unearned runs during a 15-6 Central Lakes Conference loss to the St. Cloud Tech Tigers Thursday.

Paige Beseman recorded a pair of doubles, drove in two and scored one for the Flyers and Chloe Nelson scored twice.
