Staples-Motley’s Nick Forsberg shaved three strokes off his first-round score but still had to settle for second place in the final round of the Pequot Lakes Invite at the Preserve on Wednesday.

Forsberg, who shot 77 in Tuesday’s first round at the Pines, carded a 74 on Wednesday but Hermantown’s Tray Sundbom shot a 70 Wednesday after a 79 Tuesday to grab medalist honors at 149.

“I felt like my putting was better today,” Forsberg said. “(Tuesday) was kind of a struggle. I could have been quite a few strokes lower but that’s golf, I guess.”

Forsberg’s teammate, Michael Strain, finished sixth with a 156. He shot 79 the first day, 77 on Wednesday, as the Cardinals placed sixth as a team.

Brainerd, which placed 11th, was led by Will Feyder’s 168.

“It just shows how young and inexperienced we are with playing the game,” Warriors coach Brian Wallace said of his team’s 696 total. “Our team is in a serious rebuilding mode. We look forward to hopefully seeing improvement the rest of this year.”

Pequot Lakes, led by Alex Goerges’ 82-82-164, was the highest area finisher, other than Staples-Motley, in ninth place.

“We got some good scores from our young guys,” Patriots coach Steve Stoxen said. “I was surprised by the play of our young kids, and Goerges is always steady. He’s just been solid the last two years. If I can get my veterans to come around with their short games we should be in good shape.”

The tournament started almost two hours late Wednesday because of frost on the course.

“We waited for the frost to get out,” Stoxen said. “It went well once the weather cooperated. We lucked out. We were supposed to get a bunch of snow.”

Forsberg thought the conditions were “pretty good.”

“They were a lot better than I thought they would be,” he said. “The sun actually came out for about nine holes. It wasn’t too windy, it was good golf conditions for this early in the year.”

Other leading scores by area individuals included James Cragun, Crosby-Ironton, 178; Dustin Herold, Pierz, 175; Saul Sasse, Pine River-Backus, 185; and Tyler Fix, Wadena-Deer Creek, 171.
