AREA SOFTBALL: Ackerman no-hits Red Lake PR-B blows out Warriors

RED LAKE — Autumn Ackerman walked two and struck out 10 as she shut down the Red Lake Warriors for a five-inning no-hitter in the Pine River-Backus Tigers’ 20-0 Upper Mississippi Conference victory Thursday.

PR-B’s Katie Wangberg went 3-3 with a home run, double and two RBIs. Nicole Tulenchik finished 2-3 with two RBIs. Nicole Arends was 2-3, Taylor Sheley was 1-2 with a triple and Megan Felhous was 2-3 with two doubles.

PEQUOT LAKES — Emily Doss was 3-4 with two RBIs and Cierra Anderson was 3-4 as the Pillager Huskies rallied to defeat the Pequot Lakes Patriots 6-2 Thursday.

The Patriots owned a 2-0 lead entering the sixth inning, but allowed five unearned runs.

Pequot’s Kayla Wangen was 2-4 with a double and a run and Rachael Langer went 1-2 with a double.

Pillager’s Ally Hunstad improved to 4-1 as she struck out five, walked three and allowed six hits and two earned runs.

BATTLE LAKE — It was a case of freshmen stepping up to lead the Staples-Motley Cardinals past Ottertail Central 1-0 in an eight inning non-conference game Thursday.

Freshman Megan Vetsch pitched eight innings striking out eight, walking four and allowing just two bunt singles.

The Cardinals managed three hits, all of them singles coming with two outs in the eighth. Freshman Kelsey Zetah singled to start things, advanced on a hit by sophomore Claire Uhlman and scored on freshman MacKenzie Holtz’s single.

Alexandria 12, Little Falls 2

ALEXANDRIA — Paige Beseman and Tina Munnell both went 2-for-3 in the Little Falls Flyers’ 12-2 loss to Alexandria in Thursday’s Central Lakes Conference game. 

“This truly was one of those games where the score was not indicative of the competitiveness of the game,” said coach Ron Hinnenkamp, whose Flyers scratched out nine hits.

VERNDALE — Teresa Moenkedick was 2-4, Elizabeth Johnson 1-2 and Mara Kern was 1-1 with three RBIs as the Verndale Pirates defeated Brandon-Evansville 6-2 Thursday.

Jenny Swenson three all seven innings allowing three hits and two runs, one of which was earned. She struck out five and walked three.
