BOYS TENNIS: Warriors’ season ends

SARTELL — The Elk River Elks won all seven matches in straight sets and ended Brainerd’s season with a 7-0 win over the Warriors in the semifinals of the Section 8-2A team tournament Wednesday.

Brainerd won a total of 12 games against the South Subsection’s top-seeded and Class 2A’s seventh-ranked Elks.

“Elk River’s a very good team,” Warriors coach Bruce Thompson said. “Down the line they’ve got some pretty nice athletes. They’re so solid at No. 1 and No. 2 singles. They’re a deep  team.

“It was a tough environment to play in with the wind, but we’ve had a good season. Our kids played well. I appreciate the effort of all of our kids.”

In the section doubles tournament, Brainerd seniors Cole Sundquist and Jordan Shiltz lost to Elk River’s eighth-grade twins Josh and Sam Gearou 6-2, 6-2.

“They’ve had a great career with Brainerd Warrior tennis,” Thompson said of Shiltz and Sundquist. “They’re two great kids. The team from Elk River’s a very solid team. They’re only eighth-graders but they play like seniors, like machines.

“Cole and Jordan didn’t play badly. There were some nice points played.”
