ST. CLOUD — The Pequot Lakes Patriots captured the Section 6-2A team championship and Staples-Motley’s Emily Israelson and Kristin Schneider qualified for state as individuals during the final round of the section tournament Monday at Territory Golf Club.

The Patriots, returning to state for the first time since 2004 when they won the title in a 2-class format, fired a 346 Monday to finish with a 2-day total of 707. S-M was runner-up and eight shots back.

Savannah Stone led Pequot with a 2-day 165, including a 79 Monday. She and Israelson tied for overall medalist honors.

Maggie Heggerston was next for Pequot with a 167 following a 78 in the final round. She tied Rocori’s Marja Sorenson for overall runner-up honors.

The other two Pequot scores that counted were Erika Schwalbe (2-day 182) and Samantha Olmscheid (210). Amanda Nies shot 211 and Megan Snyder shot 229.

Pequot, which won the state championship in 2002 and was third in 2003, trailed St. Cloud Cathedral by 10 strokes entering the final round.

“Maggie came in at 78 with a 2-stroke penalty, that’s amazing,” Patriots coach Jon Dale said. “Savannah, I stayed away from her, I knew she was doing well. After that I was thinking like we’ve got this, but I didn’t realize we beat (Cathedral) by 21 strokes today (346 to 367).

“I’m thrilled for our girls. I don’t think they realize it yet but it’s a pretty good accomplishment. I’m really excited for them.”

Israelson shot 85 the first day, 80 the second. She finished 32nd at state last year.

Schneider, a foreign exchange student from Germany, finished at 174 with rounds of 93-81. Her 81 Monday was a career low.

Rounding out S-M’s top four were Cierra Waverek with a 2-day 188 and Tera Weyer 193.
