AUTO RACING: Sport Compact, Diesel Weekend this weekend at BIR

Matt Zych won the Sportsman Class during the Jags Pro Truck Shop’s Midwest Diese

Brainerd International Raceway will have something for everyone this weekend during the Sport Compact and Diesel Weekend.

The weekend includes a combined event featuring the third annual Modern Automotive Performance Proving Grounds and the Jags Pro Truck Shop’s Midwest Diesel Shootout. Both events will contribute to the weekend's drag racing program, but the Proving Grounds will also showcase other events that have become crowd favorites, namely, competitive drifting and autocross.

Drifting is where cars are timed as they maneuver through a course by basically sliding sideways during controlled skids. Autocross also is a timed event on a course with emphasis on car handling skills without the extensive controlled skidding.

On the drag strip, front-, rear- and all-wheel-drive imports and sport compacts, and bikes will test and tune all day Saturday, and then qualifying and eliminations take place Sunday starting at 9 a.m. Last year’s event attracted more than 170 cars and bikes from as far away as California, Tennessee and Illinois.

The Quick 16 winner was Matthew Faul and his 1990 Ford Probe GT2. Faul had the top speed of the weekend (161.25 mph). He beat Chris Carey in the finals after Carey posted the best time of the weekend at 8.478 seconds.

Proving Grounds cars will share the drag strip with diesel cars and trucks competing in the Jags Pro Truck Shop’s Midwest Diesel Shootout. Most of the entries last year were pickup trucks, primarily, Dodge Ram 2500 and 3500s that competed in Sportsman and Super Street classes.

The Proving Grounds will also use BIR’s 2.5-mile, 13-turn Competition Road Course on Saturday for open lapping.

Saturday night, everyone will be treated to live music at BIR's Wheelie Bar and Grill by Midnight Radio.

Sunday afternoon's schedule includes car show judging.

“This event is really becoming popular among our fans because there is so many different components to it," BIR owner Jed Copham said in a news release. "We use the drag strip, our road course, the infield for the car show and the pro pit area for drifting and autocross. It's a lot of fun for the fans because there's so much going on."
