YOUTH BASEBALL: Baxter advances into Cal Ripken winners’ bracket

BAXTER — Matt Tautges drove in the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth as Baxter advanced to the winners’ bracket in the 12-U Cal Ripken Midwest Plains Regional Tournament with a 4-3 win over Washington County, Iowa, on Friday at Oscar Kristofferson Park.

Matt Patrick drew a walk to start the third inning. Base hits by Peter Moran and Matt Tautges allowed Patrick to score. Braedon Metz added a double to score Moran and Tautges to give Baxter a 3-0 lead. 

Iowa battled back in the top of the sixth to tie it 3-3, but fell short when Baxter rallied in its half of the inning to win. Mac Brink and Moran reached on base hits and Tautges drove in Brink with the game-winning base hit. 

Joey Tschida pitched the first three innings, striking out six and allowing only two hits. Tautges finished, striking out six and giving up three hits in the last three innings.

Tautges received the Wow Award for his game-winning hit.

Baxter will face Missouri at 1 p.m. Saturday in the winners’ bracket. 

Canada 8, South Dakota 6

South Dakota broke a 2-2 tie in the eighth, scoring four runs, only to have Canada score six in the bottom half of the inning, including a walk-off 3-run home run by Marcus Roflik. 

South Dakota was led by Tanner Van Driel going 3 for 3 and Michael Heine with a double. 

Canada was led by Jake Hesselink 2 for 4, Braydon Cobb 3 for 4 and Roflik 2 for 5. 

Jordan Kathol pitched six innings for South Dakota, striking out eight. Hunter Cameron pitched the final two innings with three strikeouts. 

Roflik pitched six innings for Canada, striking out one. Hesselink struck out two in two innings.

The Wow Award went to Jordan Payer for a diving catch at third base.

Independence, Kan. 11 Washington County, Iowa 8

Jalynn Lawrie and Robbie Bailey both went 3-4 to lead  Kansas to an 11-8 victory over Washington County, Iowa, Friday in the losers bracket.

Noah Stroble finished 2-3 for Kansas and Cal Bloomfield was 1-3 with a triple. 

Lawrie started on the mound for Kansas and registered two strikeouts while giving up eight hits and two walks. Zack Schoeder and Bloomfield pitched in relief.

Leading Iowa at the plate were Mason Rich, 4-4, and Ryan Loy, 1-4 with a double. 

Pitching for Iowa was Drake Brezina who struck out five and allowed five hits. In relief, Collin Zear struckout three and allowed six hits while Aaron Vittoe gave up a pair of hits and struckout two.

North Fork, Colo.  5 Regina, Canada 0

Northfold, Colo., advanced in the losers bracket behind the pitching of Colton Deluzio who gave up just one hit over three innings leading the way to a 5-0 win over Regina, Canada Friday evening.

Chase Haitt was 2-3 at the plate while Mario Espanoza and Ryan Hafley turned in strong relief performances on the mound.

Leading Canada was Marcus Roflik who went 2-3. 

The WOW award went to Deluzio for throwing only 14 pitches in 3 innings of work.
