GIRLS SOCCER: Alexandria edges Warriors in overtime
BAXTER — Emily Beltran and Hannah Lundstrom teamed up for Brainerd’s only goal in the Warriors’ 2-1 overtime loss to the Alexandria Cardinals in Thursday’s Central Lakes Conference match.
After a scoreless first half, Beltran gave Brainerd a 1-0 lead with an assist from Lundstrom at the 50:45 mark.
The lead was short-lived, however, as Chelsey Salto scored unassisted less than a minute later. Rachel Drew kicked in the winner for the Cards less than a minute into the 10-minute overtime.
“In the OT, we had a couple of close chances to come back and tie,” said Brainerd coach Ricky Lacerte. “Alex was lucky to walk away with a win.”
It was the second one-point loss of the season to the Cards, who defeated Brainerd 1-0 on Sept. 6 and came into Thursday’s contest with a 6-2-3 record.
“Our girls played hard, but the excuse of not being able to finish only goes so far and sometimes we fall short.
“We dominated the first three quarters of the game. Our defense really locked down. Haley Campbell had a phenomenal game as well as Angela Sausen. They were two great defensive players today.”
Warriors keeper Tori Saxum turned away 13 shots as Brainerd outshot Alex 19-15.
