VOLLEYBALL: Fergus Falls defeats Warriors in four

FERGUS FALLS —  Sydnie Mauch smacked down 16 kills and three blocks along with three ace serves, but the Brainerd Warriors lost 3-1 to the Fergus Falls Otters in a Central Lakes Conference match Thursday.

Brainerd dominated the first game 25-16 and contended in the second game before losing 25-22 to the Otters, who came into the contest leading the conference with a 7-0 record, 11-2 overall. Fergus put the match away, taking the final two games 25-12 and 25-16.

“We won the first easily and were in the second, but in the third set we mentally weren’t there,” said Brainerd coach Jared Diem. “We lost our gas and when the chips were down, the girls stopped trusting each other.”

Sarah Miller scrambled for 20 digs and Hannah Kangas put up 20 set assists.

“Everybody touts Fergus Falls for their big hitters, but they’re really good defensively,” said Diem. “Not a lot of ball dropped on their side of the net tonight.”

The loss leaves Brainerd still in second place, four points behind Fergus Falls in the conference standings. The 13-8 Warriors (6-2 conference) continue CLC play Tuesday, hosting third-place Willmar, which Brainerd defeated 3-2 in the second match of the season Sept. 1.
