BOYS SOCCER: Flyers advance to subsection semifinals
BELLE PRAIRIE — Grant Bell picked up another hat trick and helped the No. 2-seeded Little Falls Flyers defeat the No. 7 Sauk Rapids Storm 6-1 in the South Subsection 8-1A quarterfinals Thursday.
Earlier this year, Bell became the Minnesota career goals scoring leader and Thursday’s hat trick gives him 32 goals for this year, 111 for his career.
Also scoring goals for the Flyers were Mark Anez, Kyle Gapinski and senior Derek Toso, who tallied his first goal of the season on a penalty kick at the 54:53 mark.
Little Falls keeper Mike Stumpf stopped all six shots the Storm attempted with the only goal of the game for Sauk Rapids coming on an own goal when a throw-in went off a Flyer near the goal with 19 seconds left.
The 13-2 Flyers will host No. 3-seed St. Cloud Cathedral in the subsection semifinals at 1 p.m. Saturday. The teams split in the regular season, with Little Falls winning 2-1 Sept. 15 and the Crusaders winning 1-0 Oct. 4.
“We’re going to have to come up against Cathedral and we’re going to have to step it up,” said Little Falls coach Julie Bell. “We will need to be a little quicker with our passing and win the 50/50 balls to beat them on Saturday.”
