BOYS SOCCER: Top-seeded Anoka nips Warriors 1-0 in quarterfinals
ANOKA — Despite playing probably their best match of the season, the No. 8-seeded Brainerd Warriors saw their season end when they were edged 1-0 by No. 1 Anoka in the Section 8-2A quarterfinals Thursday.
Anoka outshot Brainerd 11-2, but the Warriors were able to keep the Tornadoes out of the net for almost 65 minutes.
The winning goal was punched in by Jake McElmury at the 64:23 mark of the second half.
“This was by far the best game we’ve played all year,” said Brainerd coach Tony Smith. “Holding them to one goal was fantastic.
“It was a very hard-fought contest and I’m very proud of the boys. It was kind of heart-wrenching to see it end in a one-point loss.
“(Keeper) Thor (Linnerooth) came up with some huge saves and overall everyone played well. We didn’t lose our composure and kept it close.”
Brainerd finishes 3-10-2. Anoka (10-3-4) advances to the section semifinals, hosting the Buffalo/Moorhead winner 1 p.m. Saturday.
