GIRLS TENNIS: Kraemer-Salo headed to state

SARTELL — Brainerd’s Kayla Kraemer and Mikinzee Salo rolled all the way to the finals where they defeated St. Cloud Tech’s Lexi Portz-Jill Kedrowski 6-4, 6-1 to advance to the Class 2A doubles tournament.

Salo-Kraemer didn’t drop a set in winning their first Section 8-2A doubles title.

“They (Kraemer/Salo) did a really nice job,” said Brainerd head coach Ellen Fussy. “We thought, in our mind, that they were the best doubles team in the section and they had to prove it. They did.”

The Warriors other duo of Nichole Gervenak-Megan Hintz finished the tournament in third place, winning there quarterfinal match before falling to teammate’s Kraemer-Salo in the semifinals 6-1, 6-3. Gervenak and Hintz went on to win their third-place match and then lost to Portz-Kedrowski 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 in a true second match.

“Our No. 2 doubles had a really great year, “ said Fussy. “All of our girls had a really good tournament and they represented Brainerd well.”

In singles action, Brainerd’s Brianna Rademacher lost to Willmar’s Xiaodan Yu in the quarterfinals. Yu went on to win the section singles title.

Semifinals: Kraemer-Salo (Brd) def. Gervenak-Hintz 6-1, 6-3

Third Place: Gervenak-Hintz (Brd) def. Kristen Schmidt-Ellie Bergstrand (Alexandria) 6-3, 6-2

Finals: Kraemer-Salo (Brd) def. Lexi Portz-Jill Kedrowski (St. Cloud Tech) 6-4, 6-1

True Second: Portz-Kedrowski (St. Cloud Tech) def. Gervenak-Hintz (Brainerd) 7-6 (7-1), 6-3

Next: Brainerd in Class 2A state tournament at Baseline Tennis Center at University of Minnesota, Minneapolis Noon Oct. 25.
