7-1A CROSS COUNTRY: C-I boys advance to state

CLOQUET — The Crosby-Ironton boys are advancing to the Class 1A state tournament by virtue of their second-place finish in Thursday’s Section 7-1A meet.

Coaches will often say that state rankings don’t mean that much, but in this case the final Class 1A boys rankings were pretty accurate. Three of the state’s top 11 teams were competing in Section 7-1A led by fifth-ranked Mesabi East, ninth-ranked C-I and 11th-ranked Esko.

And that’s the way the three finished with Mesabi winning with 46 points followed by C-I in second (54) and Esko third (69). The top two teams and top 10 individual finishers advance to the state meet Nov. 5 at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

The C-I girls finished third, 24 points behind second-place International Falls. Esko won the girls meet with 25 points.

The Ranger boys placed four runners in the top 10, led by Seth Carlton’s time of 16:59.4, good for fifth place. Following him were Will Goodwin in seventh, Jude Severson ninth, Jacob Goodwin 10th and John Stokman 23rd.

“They’re a very good team,” first-year C-I coach Erica Perpich said of Mesabi East. “There’s a reason they’re ranked fifth in the state.

“Everyone of our boys ran a tough race and gave it their all. We definitely have a tough section and I’m proud of the way our boys turned out.”

September Prushek led the Ranger girls, finishing 12th in 16:09.4, about 5/100ths of a second behind the final top 10 qualifying spot. Sami Goshey came in 18th followed by Shelby Vukelich in 25th, Margaret Stokman 28th, and Cassidy Bonsante 32nd.
