8-2A CROSS COUNTRY: Warrior girls fifth, boys 12th in section LF’s Zimny qualifies for state
COLD SPRING — The Brainerd girls finished fifth and the boys 12th in the Section 8-2A meet Thursday in what Warriors coach Dave Herath described as one of the fastest sections in the state.
The Little Falls girls finished in eighth place and the Flyer boys came in 11th, led by Preston Zimny who crossed the line fourth 16:17 and qualified for the Class 2A state meet Nov. 5 at St. Olaf College in Northfield.
The top two teams and top 10 individuals advance.
The Warrior girls were led by sophomore Sarah Yeh who narrowly missed advancing to state with a 12th-place finish in 15:17. She was followed by Alli Kosobud (20), Michaela Quast (25), Maria West (26), Lydia Herath (45), Sarah Fairbanks (47) and Abby Selisker (54).
“It was an amazingly fast girls field,” Dave Herath said. “We ran better than we did last year when we finished runner-up.
“Arguably, the girls were in the fastest section in the state. The top 10 girls all finished under 15 minutes — I’ve never heard of that, at least not until today.”
Alexandria’s Jamie Piepenburg won the race with a time of 14:04.
“Sarah Yeh dropped 30 seconds from her (previous) best time and Maria West and Sarah Fairbanks did about the same,” Dave Herath said.
Riley Nelsen led the Brainerd boys, crossing the line in 17:21 for 26th place. He was followed by Gerrit Garberich (51), Justin Warling (60), Zean Baker (65) and Conner Gunsbury (89).
“Hopefully, this gets us going to shoot for an even higher place next year,” said Herath. “We only graduate Michaela on the girls team and Riley on the boys.”
Mattia Hendrickson led the Little Falls girls, finishing 15th with a time of 15:18.
