MEN’S BASKETBALL: Raider men open with 87-59 win

THIEF RIVER FALLS — Maurice Hernandez and Roberto Lopez came off the bench scoring 16 and 15 points respectively to lead the Central Lakes College Raiders to an 87-59 win over the Northland Pioneers in their season opener Tuesday night.

Also scoring in double figures were Michael Farrington with 15 and Kwamaine Johnson with 10.

“The key to the game was we played very well defensively,” said Raider coach Jim Russell. “We got a lot of fast break points and got Northland to turn the ball over 30 times. We took care of the basketball ourselves and only had 10 turnovers.”

Brandon Davis added eight points and led with six rebounds. Farrington turned in eight assists.

Lopez was five of six from the field and the Raiders as a team hit on 33 of 63 attempts (52 percent) including eight of 16 from three-point range.

“Overall, it was a great team effort for us in a tough environment,” said Russell. “They (Northland) don’t lose a lot of games up there.”
