It was the 17th straight win for Marshall, the top-ranked team in 2A and the top-seeded team in the tournament. The Tigers won the consolation championship last year and were champions in 2009.

“They have everyone back from last year,” W-DC coach Sue Volkmann said. “They’ve been together now for two years for sure, some longer than that, and it really showed.”

Kenzie Beekman spiked 24 kills for Tigers, Morgan McKittrick added 19 and Sydney Griffin 10 as Marshall improved to 29-4.

“McKittrick and Beekman those two outside hitters are very strong hitters,” Volkmann said. “They could jump. They were going over the top of us. We played a lot of defense tonight.”

Emily Miron had 25 kills and three blocks as W-DC lost for the first time in 10 matches. Brittney Noon added 12 kills and two blocks. Heather Theisen contributed 40 set assists. Caitlin Volkmann collected 20 digs, Hope Theisen 19 and Avery Jackson 15.

W-DC plays the Jordan/Stewartville winner for third place at 1 p.m. Saturday.

“We’re happy to be playing,” Volkmann said. “You always want to play all three days down here. It’s another opportunity to play another game. We did play pretty well tonight. If we can do that again and score more I think we have a good chance.”

Marshall won the first game 25-18, trailing only once early. The game was tied four times but the lead changed hands only twice.

W-DC rebounded to win the second game 25-23, leading virtually the entire way in a game that was tied only twice. Miron clinched the win with a kill.

Marshall led from start to finish and won Game Three 25-13.

Game Four featured seven ties and six lead changes before Marshall again prevailed 25-13.
