VOLLEYBALL: Warriors’ Mauch signs with Minnesota-Duluth
Sydnie Mauch of Brainerd is one of four players who signed with the University of Minnesota Duluth volleyball program during the early signing period last week.
Mauch, Ashley Hinsch of Zumbrota-Mazeppa, Mariah Scharf of Orono and Monica Turner of Lakeville South signed National Letters of Intent with the Bulldogs, adding two middle blockers, an outside hitter and a setter to the mix for the 2012 season.
“We’re happy we got some good athletes, some size, and were able to grab some kids from some high-profile club programs who can get in the mix early in their careers,” UMD coach Jim Boos said in a news release. “We needed to bring in some help to address either immediate or depth needs with graduation.”
Mauch, a 6-1 middle blocker, played four years for the Warriors under coach Jared Diem. In 2010 and 2011, she was an all-state nominee, earning All-Central Lakes Conference honors both seasons. She was an all-conference honorable mention selection in 2009, and was twice named Central Lakes Conference Player of the Week.
“Sydnie’s a strong, physical kid who fits the mold of some people we’ve had success with in the past,” Boos said in the news release. “We are intrigued by her size and athleticism and think she could become an impact player for us.”
